Project Description

Plyform

Plyform

Plyform creates the illusion of complexity, but is in fact composed of one simple cut profile, repeated, conjoined, and intersecting, to create a low-rise table of multiple planes.

The profile shape allows for optimum usage of the material: Just two sheets of ply are required, with minimum wastage.

Finished in clear laquer.

Plyform is made using CNC routing technology, and assembled and finished by hand.

Material: Plywood

Dimensions: Height 320mm; Length 1620mm; Width 630mm

Plyform creates the illusion of complexity, but is in fact composed of one simple cut profile, repeated, conjoined, and intersecting, to create a low-rise table of multiple planes.

The profiles are cut using CNC routing: I liked the idea of producing a design that marries technology with the hand-crafting needed to finish the piece.

I specifically wanted the qualities of light colouring and strength from the material: The birch colouring suits the lightness of the design; Plywood’s construction and strength lends itself well to CNC routing – this method of cutting was required to ensure precision in each profile, so that inaccuracies didn’t cause failure of fit, or distortions over time.

Construction relies on a high-strength resin glue and hardwood dowel used as an internal reinforcement and to align and join the individual profiles together.

I especially like the layered detail of the end grain of furniture grade plywood, which is exposed throughout the design; the layered lines add texture and interest, and accentuate the flowing form of the design.

The profile shape allows for optimum usage of the material: Just two sheets of ply are required, with minimum wastage.

From an environmental perspective, Birch is an abundant species, relatively fast growing managed as a sustainable forest resource.

Virtually every part of the tree can be utilized in some form (twigs are used for brooms and sauna whisks; timber for furniture and flooring; bark has been used for roofing and canoes; waste timber and residue at plywood mills is used for other materials and boiler fuel for energy production).

Plyform is made from A grade birch plywood, cut using CNC routing technology, and assembled and finished by hand.  The layered lines of end grain exposed throughout add texture and interest, and accentuating the flowing form, whilst the birch colouring suits the sense of lightness in the design.
